Special instructions   This is a new trail for us, so it's extra exciting.

Parking at Chantry Flats will be very limited, so we will be meeting at the base of the mountain for some hot car pooling action. Please meet at this residential address -- 1210 Arno Dr Sierra Madre, CA 91024.

I will be driving and have room for 4 others. I also have an extra National Forrest Adventure Pass (parking pass) for one other driver.

If you arrive at the meeting point late and we've already moved on to higher ground, start on up and give me a call at 310,,531,,0531. Just be prepared to pay for parking.

Directions  Take the Santa Anita exit from the 210 toward Acadia. At the foot of the hill take a right on Arno Dr in Sierra Madre. From here we will carpool up to Chantry Flats. We want to minimize parking congestion and the amount we pay in fees.

If you miss the carpool, keep on Santa Anita Canyon Road until it ends at Chantry Flats. If you can find a parking spot here, snag it and display your Adventure Pass. The Pack Station has overflow parking, but you'll have to pay an extra $5, even if you've already got a pass.

The Good  - 50 foot tall Sturtevant Falls
- Stream crossings
- Shady, cool canyons
- Indications are that pets are allowed

The Bad  -You have to have an Adventure Pass to park here. (Day passes should be available at the station before you get there.)
-This area is often very crowded, but it gets better the further into the hills you go.
-If you are very afraid of heights, this is not a hike for you.

Where  Sierra Madre

Notes  From the main parking lot we will descend into the canyon on a paved road. Shortly after a short bridge, we'll continue north on the Gabrielino Trail to Sturtevant Falls. Along the way we'll encounter many rustic cabins, and quite possibly some of the residents. There will be river hiking, and there will be high, narrow paths.

The trail to the falls is only 2 miles long, but we will have the option of continuing around the full 9 mile loop and hitting such landmarks as Mount Zion and Hoagee's Camp.
