Special instructions   Just north of San Francisco's Golden Gate is MOUNT TAMALPAIS, 6,300 acres of redwood groves and oak woodlands with a spectacular view from the 2,571-foot peak. On a clear day, visitors can see the Farallon Islands 25 miles out to sea, the Marin County hills, San Francisco and the bay, hills and cities of the East Bay, and Mount Diablo. On rare occasions, the Sierra Nevada's snow-covered mountains can be seen 150 miles away.

"... Tamalpais can be seen as the climax of this incomparable landscape at the continent's edge, this place where the Pacific breaches the thousand-mile mountain barrier along the western rim of America." ---Harold Gilliam

We'll meet at the Mill Valley Park-N-Ride at 8:00 a.m. :

If it's raining and miserable we can do Temelpa, then we'll be miserable too. If it's snowing we can do Railroad/Fern
Creek or Mountain Home, or Temelpa, or whatever. If it's clear and sunny we can go do Hill 88 or something. The hike should take about 3.5 hours, and it will be strenuous.

Here are the three options I mentioned, from East to West, the base of
Railroad Grade, the Summit/Fern section of Railroad and Temelpa, and
then up at Mountain Home Inn on the Gravity Car grade:

Afterwards we tentatively plan to meet for lunch at Winships in Sausalito:
